Seven arrested during riots in Eindhoven after PSV win; Cop bitten by police dog

The police arrested seven people during riots at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven on Sunday evening after PSV won the Eredivisie title for the 26th time. During the commotion, a police dog bit one of the police officers, a police spokesperson told Omroep Brabant.

Large groups of PSV supporters turned on the police during the riots, throwing stones, standing tables, and fireworks at officers. The riot police intervened, and peace eventually returned to the stadium around 9:30 p.m.

It is unclear whether anyone else got hurt in the riots. Several media outlets reported that a press photographer was beaten up, but the police could not confirm that.

Thousands of supporters gathered at the Philips Stadium to await their champions on Sunday evening. According to Omroep Brabant, the player bus was supposed to drive among the fans, but that didn’t happen. Instead, the players waved to the fans from the stadium and showed off the trophy.

The team will be honored in Eindhoven on Monday afternoon.

Rotterdam also had celebrating football fans on Sunday evening. Galatasaray supporters celebrated their club’s victory in the Turkish league on the Coolsingel and the Stadhuisplein. There were fireworks, flares, and motorbikes, Rijnmond reported.

Due to the crowds, the police cordoned off Coolsingel and diverted the trams. The riot police and enforcement officers were on standby, but did not have to intervene before midnight, according to the local broadcaster.

Galatasaray secured the Turkish national title with a 3-0 victory over Kayserispor. It is the 25th national title for the Istanbul club, and the third one in a row.
