Hayfever season is here: Pollen counts quickly rising

It’s time for hayfever sufferers to stock up on their meds. The flowering period is about to begin, and pollen counts are quickly rising, especially birch pollen at the moment. The coming week’s weather is also ideal for increasing the pollen count.

The weather has a very big influence on the amount of pollen in the air. More wind generally means more pollen blown from flowering grasses, trees, and plants into the air. Rain typically cleans the air, with raindrops carrying the pollen to the ground. But light rain now and again stimulates plants to flower, increasing the pollen production.

Scattered showers and a weak to moderate wind are exactly what the KNMI expects for the week to come. Monday will still be mostly dry, with maximums ranging from 15 degrees in the northwest to 18 degrees in the southeast, but Tuesday will be outright rainy and every day after that will have a solid chance of scattered showers. The wind will be weak to moderate, coming from various directions.

Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week, with maximums between 18 and 23 degrees. For the rest of the week, afternoon temperatures will climb to the mid to high teens - still above the typical high temperature for the time of year (13.5 degrees).
