Dutch teen suspected in Cologne store bombing tied to extortion plot

An 18-year-old Dutch man is suspected of causing an explosion at a clothing store in Cologne, Germany, in what police believe may be linked to an extortion attempt. The incident took place in September 2024 and is now part of a wider investigation into organized crime involving Dutch suspects, De Telegraaf reports.

The Cologne police reported Friday that the suspect is already in custody in the Netherlands in connection with an unrelated case. During a search conducted Thursday, authorities recovered clothing believed to have been worn by the suspect at the time of the explosion.

The blast caused a fire at the store. A passerby who attempted to extinguish the flames was injured in the process, according to local police.

Investigators suspect the explosion was related to an extortion attempt, though not directly aimed at the store owner. Instead, the intended target is believed to be someone from the owner's social circle.

It is not yet clear whether this incident is connected to a broader wave of violence in and around Cologne. In January, authorities in the Netherlands and Germany arrested at least 23 individuals in connection with a series of violent attacks believed to be part of a drug-related conflict.

According to investigators, a criminal group in Germany allegedly hired Dutch criminals to retaliate against rival gangs, resulting in a string of bombings, multiple kidnappings, and targeted shootings of residential properties.

The Cologne police have not confirmed a link between the clothing store explosion and the ongoing drug war investigation but have not ruled it out. The case remains under active investigation.
