Dutch man, 77, dies in 40-meter fall during hike in Austrian Alps

A 77-year-old man from the Netherlands died after falling from a steep mountain slope during a hike in Austria, according to Nu.nl. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts and the arrival of emergency responders, the man could not be saved, police in the state of Tirol confirmed.

The incident occurred near the village of Sankt Johann in Tirol, north of Kitzbühel, where the Dutch man was hiking with his daughter and son-in-law. The group had reached the summit of the Kitzbüheler Horn, located at nearly 2,000 meters above sea level. After taking a break at a restaurant at the top, they began their descent into the valley.

At approximately 1,600 meters altitude, the man lost his footing and fell roughly 40 meters down a steep mountainside before coming to a stop. His son-in-law ran to him and attempted resuscitation on the spot.

American hikers who witnessed the fall immediately alerted emergency services. A trauma helicopter was dispatched to the scene, but by the time medical personnel arrived, the man had already succumbed to his injuries. A police helicopter later recovered the man’s body from the mountainside.
