Two Amsterdam men identified as victims of fatal A2 collision
Authorities have confirmed the identities of the two men who died in a severe crash on the A2 near Nieuwegein early Saturday morning, according to the police. The victims were two men, ages 25 and 29, from Amsterdam.
The crash occurred around 4 a.m. when a van collided with a truck, causing both vehicles to catch fire. The truck driver sustained only minor injuries, but emergency responders were unable to save the two occupants of the van.
For hours after the crash, uncertainty remained about the van’s occupants due to the extent of the fire damage. Initially, emergency services were unsure if anyone was inside. On Saturday morning, police confirmed that two bodies were recovered from the burnt-out vehicle.
The accident led to a prolonged closure of the A2 between the Oudenrijn interchange and Nieuwegein as investigators worked to determine the cause. The road remained partially closed for much of Saturday. The Midden-Nederland traffic investigation team continues to examine the circumstances of the deadly crash.
