The Boeing passenger jet was shot down by a Russian buk missile while flying over eastern Ukraine, officials have said.
Two people became trapped under the counterweight of a lock door of the Prinses Beatrixsluis in Nieuwegein on Monday morning. Rescue workers managed to free one of the victims around noon, but the other is still trapped. Local safety office Veiligheidsregio Utrecht expects that it will take several hours yet to free the second victim.
The police believe that a group of Moroccan criminals had help from a corrupt Tilburg police officer in 2014, the Public Prosecutor said in the criminal case against the former dog handler on Thursday, ANP report.

"He says that it was a joke among friends. He wanted to scare them and says that he did not even see the girl", police spokesperson Martin de Wit said to the Telegraaf.
The police raided eight buildings in Utrecht, Nieuwengein, Vianen and Tiel on Tuesday morning for as yet unknown reasons. Seven people were arrested, the police said on Twitter.

The possible explosives were found around 7:30 a.m. According to RTV Utrecht, one grenade was left in front of a home. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Defense recovered and removed the items. The police can not yet say whether they are real grenades, only that they "have the appearance of grenades".

Mayor Frans Backhuijs of Nieuwegein ordered a family living on Beatrixstraat to leave their home for three months for the sake of the safety of the neighborhood. Last week shots were fired at the home, and on Thursday two hand grenades were found in front of it.

Archeologists found the remains of a baby that was buried in Nieuwegein some 6 thousand years ago. The remains of the baby was found with the skeleton of a young woman, which was excavated in the Het Klooster area in 2015. When archeologists studied the young woman's skeleton more closely in Leiden, the baby was found in her arms, AD reports.
The municipality of Nieuwegein calls this a unique archeological find for the Netherlands. This is the oldest baby remains ever found in the country. The discovery was presented at the Nieuwegein town hall on Tuesday.

Asbestos was released during a large fire on industrial terrain Liesbosch in Nieuwegein on Sunday night. On Monday morning a number of roads around the terrain, including the N408 in both directions, are closed to the public, as the authorities investigate how far the asbestos spread.

A police officer fired a warning shot in Nieuwegein on Monday evening while arresting a half-naked, aggressive man with a knife, the Utrecht police said on Twitter.
Witnesses reported to the police seeing the man walking around on Nedereindseweg, which runs parallel to the A2 highway, NOS reports. The man had no shirt on and was walking with knife in hand.

From Wednesday divers will be searching the Hollandse IJssel near Oudewater for World War II bombs. The river needs maintenance between Gouda and Nieuwegein, and the water board wants to make sure that everything is safe before the work can begin, NOS reports.
Historical research shows that the river contains many WWII bombs that never exploded. As long as they are left alone, they are not dangerous. But part of the work that needs to be done to the river is dredging to keep it deep enough for barges. Therefore the bombs will have to be removed first.
The A2 highway is closed in both directions between Nieuwegein and IJsselstein due to the discovery of a "suspicious object" on the highway near Nieuwegein on Wednesday. The police and an explosive expert are at the scene to investigate, the police said on Twitter.

Fake postal workers using a stolen mail truck are believed to be behind two separate robberies of a second-hand electronics store in Nieuwegein.
The iUsed location was robbed twice in five days. "This is very bizarre", iUsed manager Jip van Asperen said to newspaper AD.
On Friday two people dressed as PostNL workers stole a large order of Apple devices directly from the store. The order, value estimated at around 20 thousand euros, was already packaged and waiting for the postal van to pick it up.
An inmate committed suicide in the prison in Nieuwegein on Monday, the Ministry of Security and Justice confirmed. The Ministry is investigating how the prisoner managed to take his own life, RTV Utrecht reports.
So far no information was released regarding the prisoner's identity or how he committed suicide.
