PEC Zwolle fans' buses, police attacked with fireworks from viaduct near Almelo
Three buses carrying PEC Zwolle supporters were attacked Sunday afternoon as they traveled to an Eredivisie match against Heracles Almelo. Fireworks, smoke bombs, and bottles were thrown from an overpass on the N36/A35 highway near Wierden, striking police officers escorting the convoy, authorities said.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. as the buses, accompanied by motorcycle officers, approached Almelo. According to the Almelo police, one bus sustained damage from the attack. No injuries have been reported.
The police said multiple individuals were involved and urged witnesses to come forward. Authorities are particularly interested in reviewing dashcam footage from vehicles in the area at the time of the attack.
The Eredivisie match between Heracles Almelo and PEC Zwolle kicked off at 2:30 p.m., despite the earlier disruption. Law enforcement continues to investigate the attack and is working to identify those responsible.
