Funeral held for victims of the Hague explosion, Mayor van Zanen attends

The funeral of three family members who died in a deadly explosion on Tarwekamp in The Hague two weeks ago was held Saturday in the presence of 250 mourners, including family, friends, and Mayor Jan van Zanen.

The victims, part of a Chinese family, included a 45-year-old father, a 41-year-old mother, and their 17-year-old daughter. An 8-year-old son survived and is being cared for by relatives and community members.

“Li, Renai, and Sofia were taken from us far too soon," said Van Zanen during the service. He reflected on the tragedy that claimed six lives in total, describing the loss as devastating. “An overwhelming wave of solidarity has embraced the affected families. I hope this unity gives your family the strength to move forward.”

Family members expressed their grief, calling the deaths “incomprehensible” and “unbearable.” They also thanked the community for their support, saying, “We feel the compassion from so many, and that brings comfort.”

Donations for the victims have exceeded 650,000 euros, including 98,000 euros for the family’s funeral costs. Separate funerals were held for the other victims earlier this week.
