Memorial held for victims of the Hague apartment explosion

A memorial service took place Saturday afternoon at the Adventkerk in the Mariahoeve neighborhood of The Hague to honor the victims of the devastating apartment building explosions that occurred one week ago on Tarwekamp Street.

The explosions, which led to a massive fire, claimed six lives and left four others injured. The church, along with The Hague municipality, anticipated that several hundred residents would attend the service to reflect on the tragedy and its aftermath.

The Dutch flag outside the church hung at half-staff, while attendees entered quietly, maintaining a somber atmosphere, according to an on-site reporter.

The events deeply impacted many in the Mariahoeve community. “Since the explosion, I’ve become paranoid,” one resident shared. Another admitted that the incident is a constant presence in their thoughts.

The memorial was organized exclusively for local residents and included representatives from The Hague’s municipal government. Among those in attendance were Mayor Jan van Zanen and several city councilors.

“I am here to listen,” Van Zanen said upon his arrival. “To provide answers to people’s questions and to be here for them.”

Inside the church, a message displayed on a wall in multiple languages, including Dutch, Papiamento, Turkish, French, English, and Portuguese, read: “Dear residents of Mariahoeve, you are in our thoughts.”
