Dog dragged behind trike; drunk driver arrested
The police, with the help of the Koninklijke Marechaussee and bystanders, arrested a 58-year-old drunk driver from Hoogerheide on Sunday night. The man drove several kilometers on his trike, dragging a dog behind it. He hit at least two cars, the police said in a statement on Monday morning.
The police first received a report of the man dragging his dog behind his trike around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday. He drove from Antwerpsestraatweg in Bergen op Zoom with the dog tied behind the trike. Bystanders tried to stop the man, but to no avail. They finally managed to surround him at the crossing of Groeneweg and Langesteen in Hoogerheide.
The man was arrested by the police, assisted by the Koninklijke Marechaussee - a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military. The dog was taken to a veterinarian. What condition the animal was in, is not clear.
The man's trike was confiscated. He is facing charges of driving under the influence, violating the animal welfare law, and leaving the scene of an accident.
