One killed in Nieuwegein shooting
One person was killed in a shooting in Nieuwegein on Tuesday morning, the police confirmed according to the Telegraaf. An unknown number of perpetrators opened fire on a car on the Apolloburg around 8:00 a.m. Five shots were fired, riddling the car's windshield with bullets, according to the newspaper.
A trauma helicopter responded to the scene. First responders tried to help the victim, but it was to no avail. The victim died at the scene. So far nothing is known about the victim's identity.
There is a large police presence at the scene, where investigation is currently underway. Police officers in bulletproof vests closed down the area around the car.
The perpetrators fled. According to Nieuwegein TV, a burning car was found in Vleuten after the shooting.
Shortly after the shooting incident, the police pursued a car on the A2 highway. This ended with two suspects being arrested on Meibergdreef near AMC in Amsterdam after the police fired warning shots, according to AD. The police refused to comment on whether this action was related to the shooting.
