Suspect in Sept. '14 fatal shooting busted at Schiphol

Ugur Demir was arrested at Schiphol airport on Tuesday on suspicion of being involved in a fatal shooting at a busy restaurant in Rotterdam in September last year. According to the police, the 20 year old man turned himself in to the Koninklijke Marechaussee, royal military police, after arriving at the airport from Turkey. On September 23rd last year two men entered a busy restaurant on Mathenesserweg in Rotterdam and opened fire on a visitor. The victim, Amsterdam man Hamdi Bilir, died on the spot. The police immediately launched a large-scale investigation, assigning 20 detectives to the case. The detectives made use of several investigative procedures to track down the suspected gunmen, but this did not lead to the whereabouts of the suspects. On February 17th the two men were placed on the National Investigation List - the list containing the most wanted persons in the Netherlands - and their identities and photos were spread through various media. This led to numerous tips. The police believe that this pressure resulted in the 20 year old suspect turning himself in on Tuesday. The other suspect, 34 year old Gengiz Akin who the police was the shooter, is still on the run.
