The Port of Rotterdam Authority is setting up five additional parking areas in preparation for a no-deal Brexit. These "buffer parking locations" have space for 700 trucks, for the event that carriers do not have their customs documents in order for maritime transport to the United Kingdom, NU.nl reports.
Mayor Annemiek Jetten of Vlaardingen received multiple threats, including death threats. The mayor filed six police reports at the end of last year - four times for insult, two times for threats, RTV Rijnmond reports.

The threats may be connected to the decision to ban traditional New Year's fires in the municipality, according to the broadcaster. This decision resulted in a flood of criticism on the city government, and the mayor specifically.
A fire in a flat on Zwaluwenlaan in Vlaardingen left one man dead on Sunday. The fire broke out in the kitchen of the first floor apartment, and was discovered when smoke passed through ventilation ducts and set off smoke alarms on upper floors, a spokesperson for the fire brigade said to ANP.
Firefighters found the man's body in the apartment. Attempts to resuscitate him were to no avail. The fire department quickly extinguished the fire and is investigating how it started.
Seven men arrested on Thursday were "already a long way" into their plans to commit a terrorist attack in the Netherlands, according to Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security. "It is very intense that there are people walking around who have this planned for us", he said to RTL Nieuws.
"This is intense, but also good news", Grapperhaus said. "The police and the Public Prosecutor followed the men very closely. They were looking for AK47s and bomb belts, really terribly dangerous stuff."

The police arrested the suspect at his home in Vlaardingen. When they arrived there, a birthday party was underway. It turned out to be the suspect's own party. He turned 53.

The Krabbeplas near Vlardingen was closed for swimming on Wednesday after the discovery of thousands of dead fish in the lake. They likely died due to the heat, RTV Rijnmond reports.
Passersby saw the dead fish floating in the lake on Wednesday morning and called Staatsbosbeheer, which decided to close down the area around the lake. Visitors were already warned against swimming in the lake due to blue-green algae.
Samples were taken from the lake, to find out why the fish died.
A 19-year-old man was injured in a shooting in Vlaardingen on Thursday night. The police are looking for four suspects, ANP reports.
The shooting happened on Dirk de Derdelaan. An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene around 11:15 p.m. The victim himself called the police, a police spokesperson said to the news wire.
Exactly what happened is not yet clear. The police are investigating and talking to witnesses.

A 64-year-old woman was found critically injured in her home on Churchillsingel in Vlaardingen on Monday night. She died in hospital later that night. The police launched a large-scale investigation into her death.

Stiven Sinisterra from Apeldoorn was violently arrested by police officers wearing civilian clothing in his hometown on Monday, only to be released a short time later when the police realized they got the wrong man, he told De Stentor. The experience left the 17-year-old with a concussion, a bruised knee and a head wound.

The police are searching in and around recreational lake Krabbeplas in Vlaardingen for evidence in the murder of 21-year-old Graciela Gomes Rodriquez. The young woman was found murdered in a ditch near the lake on September 23rd, the Telegraaf reports.
A 31-year-old man from Schiedam was arrested following the discovery of a woman's body in a watery ditch in Vlaardingen on Friday morning. The police started looking for the woman after she was reported missing, the Telegraaf reports. Whether the woman was murdered, is still unclear.
Copper thieves damaged dozens of graves, tombs and memorials at the Emaus Cemetery in Vlaardingen this week by stealing copper tubes from them. The municipality informed the relatives of the affected graves and filed charges with the police, RTV Rijnmond reports.
The graves involved date from the middle of the previous century, the administrator of the cemetery said to the broadcaster. "Back then the trend was to shield graves with poles with copper tubes between them." The poles were torn down and the tubes pulled out.
