Twitter accounts run by Russian trolls from St. Petersburg tweeted about the  disaster 1,400 times, according to an analysis by NOS of a database of tweets released by Twitter on Wednesday. The database consists of 9 million tweets from Russian trolls and another 1 million tweets by Iranian trolls, including retweets. The tweets were posted by 3,814 accounts that Twitter linked to the Internet Research Agency based in St. Petersburg. Another 770 accounts are based in Iran.

The VVD's newest parliamentarian Thierry Aartsen, who will replace Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert in the Tweede Kamer on Thursday, is facing criticism about comments he made on Twitter in the past. Despite the controversy, Aartsen can count on the support of faction leader Klaas Dikjhof. As far as he is concerned, Aartsen is "most welcome" in the VVD parliamentary faction, NU.nl reports.

Russian trolls are trying to influence Dutch discussions on social media with fake accounts, De Groene Amsterdammer reports based on its own research. These trolls show support for anti-Islam party PVV and spread pro-Russian information when it comes to the MH17 disaster, according to the weekly newspaper.

Russian internet trolls tried to influence the public debate in the Netherlands and Belgium using Twitter accounts that, according to Twitter, are linked to 'trolling factory' Internet Research Agency (IRA) in St. Petersburg. These accounts posted over 900 Dutch language tweets over the past two years, NRC reports based on its own research.

A private message sent to the police on Twitter landed 58-year-old Elze Schollema from Usquert in Groningen in jail for the night earlier this week. The police considered the message threatening, but according to Schollema, they misunderstood the tone, he said to Dagblad van het Noorden.

Teenagers in the Netherlands are turning their backs on Facebook in favor of other social media platforms, Instagram and Snapchat in particular, according to the National Social Media Study 2018 by Newcom Research. Now only 43 percent of Dutch between the ages of 15 and 19 years use Facebook on a daily basis, compared to 68 percent in 2016, Marketingfacts.nl reports.

Transavia took down a video it uploaded to YouTube after the airline was accused of plagiarizing the work of a Dutch model. The videos are supposedly too similar to the videos of YouTuber .

Tim Hofman, a BNNVARA host and Korpershoek friend, wrote several tweets late on Thursday where he accused Transavia of replicating his pal's work. "To copy each and every format of independent content makers is just odd, man" he wrote.

Dutch cartoonist Ruben Oppenheimer has the Dutch government and journalist association NVJ in his corner. Oppenheimer is currently up against Turkey over a Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He and Twitter both received Turkish court orders to remove the cartoon from the social media platform.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is demanding that Dutch political cartoonist Ruben Oppenheimer and Twitter remove a cartoon of him from the social media platform. The cartoon showing him having sex with the blue Twitter bird, with the text 'Erdogan is not a goatfucker', is offensive to him. Both Oppenheimer and Twitter received a Turkish court order to remove the picture..

American president was also on people in the Netherlands' minds this year, according to Twitter. The social media platform released the top Twitter trends of the Netherlands for 2017, and Trump is number four on the list. Like last year, 'vacture', or 'vacancy' in English, topped the list for the Netherlands this year. According to Twitter, this shows that the platform plays an important role in finding jobs in the Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Tweede Kamer is shocked and outraged by reports from Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations that Russia and other countries are using fake news to try and influence public opinion in the Netherlands. "That fake accounts influence our democracy is life threateningly dangerous", CDA leader Sybrand Buma said to broadcaster NOS. The CDA and D66 are presenting a set of measures in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, on Wednesday to prevent this from happening.

Indian Prime Minister on Tuesday. To welcome him, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tweeted a message to him in Hindi. While the gesture was appreciated, Rutte's message mostly left internet users confused.

The problem was that the Dutch Prime Minister forgot to add spaces between the words.

From Tuesday KLM passengers world wide can request and receive their booking confirmation, check-in information, boarding pass and flight status on Twitter and WeChat. From now on all passengers booking a flight through the airline's website, can choose to receive their information via the two social media platforms, the airline announced, according to NU.nl.

The service launches today and will become more and more widely available in the coming weeks.

A University of Twente student says she has developed an algorithm that can help Twitter and Facebook determine if an account on the social media platforms was hacked. Meike Nauta says her algorithm analyzes six data points  that can determine a hack to a 99-percent certainty, reports .

On Saturday PVV leader Geert Wilders created a Twitter account for his cats. Whether or not this was a news worthy event caused quite a stir in Dutch Media and on social media.

Newspaper AD, like a few other newspapers, decided to write something about it and post it on the newspaper's site. Prominent VVD member and former parliament president Frans Weisglas directed a a tweet to AD editor Hans Nijenhuis, asking whether he could explain the relevance of the story. "Dear Hans Nijenhuis, can you explain the relevance of this story in your serious newspaper?" he tweeted.

Statistics Netherlands teamed up with the Center for Big Data Statistics for a study into how posts on Twitter can be used to measure the mood in society. This research resulted in the first social tension barometer, which can measure quite specifically the tension or unrest in society, Statistics Netherlands announced on Friday.

A number of popular Dutch twitter accounts, including that of Amnesty International, Caro Emerald and Donald Duck, were hacked into and hijacked. The hijackers used the accounts to spread Turkish threats and anti-Dutch propaganda, RTL Nieuws reports.

The tweets called the Netherlands and Germany Nazi countries and included a link that takes you to a YouTube video showing a compilation of speeches by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The accompanying text warns not to test Turkey's patience.

A sex tape featuring Dutch celebrity Patricia Paay was posted on Twitter earlier this week. According to her lawyer Johan Langelaar, Paay did not know she was being filmed and will be pressing charges on Friday, he said to RTL Late Night on Thursday.

"She says: I did not know that a film was made of me", Langelaar said to on the show. "I really believe her. Why would she not tell the truth to me." According to the lawyer, Paay is not 100 percent certain that it's her in the video. Langelaar plans to investigate the possibility that her face was Photoshopped into the images.

Social media companies like Twitter, Yahoo and Apple are increasingly denying requests for information from the Dutch Public Prosecutor, the Financieele Dagblad reports based on its own an analysis of the various technology companies' transparency reports.

Yahoo and Twitter did not agree to a single request last year. Apple is also agreeing to fewer and fewer requests for information. Facebook on the other hand, is quite generous in providing information.

Twitter is closing its office in Amsterdam's Zuidas. As of January 1st, an external company is taking over Twitter's advertising sales in the Netherlands. 

Twitter has been struggling with disappointing growth in the number of users and is still operating at a loss. While the latest quarterly figures were reasonably good - revenue increased by 8 percent to 616 dollar - the social media company still suffered a 103 million dollar loss.

Twitter therefore immediately announces a round of sizeable cutbacks. The closure of the Amsterdam office is part of this.

A judge in Overijssel was reprimanded and had her Twitter account suspended after she responded to EenVandaag naming PVV leader Geert Wilders politician of the year with the word: "Knettergek", which loosely translates to "madness" in English.

Twitter is downsizing and may be closing the Dutch office on Amsterdam's Zuidas in an effort to cut costs. The company also plans to lay off hundreds of employees worldwide, Het Parool reports.

According to the newspaper, Twitter was in talks with Salesforce, Alphabet and Disney to be acquired. But all three companies dropped out, particularly because of Twitters high costs. 

Twitter is therefore cutting its workforce. This could go hand-in-hand with a number of foreign offices closing, including the one in Amsterdam.
