The pistol used to kill populist politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002 became part of the Rijksmuseum's collection in 2012, former director Wim Pijbes said to Quote. Fortuyn's relatives donated the weapon to the museum via the Public Prosecutor, NU.nl reports.

In 2010 the Rijksmuseum announced interest in buying the firearm, in order to one day exhibit it. But due to a commotion that arose, Pijbes abandoned the purchase. After "extensive consultations with the Fortuyn family" the murder weapon was given to the museum in 2012.

Although the Late Rembrandt exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam was quite busy, there is still room for more, according to director Wim Pijbes. "There were times when it was very busy, but we did not reach the hourly maximum number of visitors in the halls," Pijbes said to the Parool. "So there is still room for growth."

In an earlier response to the criticism the exhibit received Pijbes said it's not as bad as in the Sistine Chapel or in front of Mona Lisa, but in his latest statement he says the display is "arguably approaching the boundaries of an enjoyable visit."
