The number of so-called mega-stables in the Netherlands increased from 456 in 2010 to 801 in 2017, an increase of 76 percent, animal rights organization Wakker Dier reports based on figures from Wageningen University and Research. A mega-stable is a stable that houses more than 7,500 slaughter pigs, 1,200 breeding pigs, 120,000 laying hens, 250 dairy cows, 2,500 veal calves or 1,500 goats, RTL Nieuws reports.
Between November last year and January this year there were four wolves in the Netherlands. Three of them are living on the Veluwe. The fourth roamed in Overijssel for a while, but has since returned to Germany, according to Wageningen Environmental Research, a research institute at Wageningen University, RTL Nieuws reports.
Wageningen University and Research has been threatened and harassed by a rejected student for years, to such an extent that the university was forced to get extra security. The university is now going to court to try and get the man to stop. "We find this extremely annoying", spokesperson Simon Vink of Wageningen University said to AD. "It has also been going on for years with peaks in which it is really intense."
Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture wants to use a "light form" of genetic modification as part of her efforts to make agriculture in the Netherlands more sustainable. She is currently working with companies, farmers and Wageningen University to investigate the possibilities for experimenting with the so-called CRISPR-Cas method. She will send parliament a letter about their progress in the coming weeks, she said to the Volkskrant.
Seven universities in the Netherlands made it into the top 100 of the Best Global Universities ranking. The University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University are the two best in the Netherlands, according to the ranking. They're respectively ranked 13th and 14th best in Europe and 55th and 57th in the world.

The self-driving, steering wheel-less WEpod is making its first test run on a Dutch road on Thursday. The bus will be driving a route around Wageningen University. This is the first time in the world that a self-driving vehicle will be driving with other traffic, the university announced.
