Lawyer Philippe Schol was walking his dog some 50 meters from his home on Lossersestraße in Gronau when he was shot by persons in a passing car at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The victim told neighbors who rushed to help him that he was shot by two men he knows and that they were driving a Volkswagen Polo, the neighbors told newspaper AD.

A lawyer from Enschede was injured in a shooting in Gronau, just across the border in Germany near the Twente village of Glane, on Wednesday morning. He was walking in the street when he was shot at from a moving car. The lawyer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, AD reports.

The police assume this was a targeted action against the lawyer. "There must be a relationship between perpetrator and victim", a police spokesperson said to AD. The man was conscious and able to communicate with first responders, the spokesperson said.

The first frost of the autumn happened in four places at once this year. Minimums dropped below zero in Gilze-Rijen, Eindhoven, Maastricht and Twente overnight. "With that the first ground frost after the summer is a fact", Weeronline reports.

The lowest temperature was measured at the weather station in Gilze-Rijen at -0.9 degrees. Minimums dropped to -0.4 degrees Celsius in Eindhoven and Maastricht, and in Twente the lowest temp of the night measured at -0.1 degrees.

Children who commit their first minor offense like shoplifting, will soon only face a strong reprimand. Last year the police experimented in Twente with an approach in which minors were not put in jail after a first offense, but instead had a firm conversation with a police officer in the presence of their parents. This approach will now be implemented nationwide, AD reports.

A minor girl pelted police officers with fast food and a milkshake while they were trying to arrest her 35-year-old mother at the McDrive in Oldenzaal in Twente. The woman was drunk behind the wheel and resisted arrest, the Oldenzaal police said on Facebook.

For the second year in a row, the precipitation deficit in Achterhoek and Twente reached the same level as in late July 1976 - the driest year ever in the Netherlands, the Union of Waterboards reported on Wednesday. "This region has had a hard time for two consecutive year", said Hein Pieper of waterboard Rijn en IJssel and vice-president of the Association of Waterboards, NU.nl reports.

An irrigation ban is in effect in the Achterhoek, Twente and parts of Drenthe from noon on Thursday. From then farmers in these areas are not allowed to use surface water for watering their fields, waterboards Rijn en Ijssel and Vechtstroom announced on Wednesday, NU.nl reports.

The eastern parts of the Netherlands woke up to a frost covered landscape on Wednesday morning, for the second time this month. The minimum dropped to -0.7 degrees in Twente. "That is quite exceptional",  Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar said to RTL Nieuws.

Four men being murdered in a grow shop in Enschede earlier this month may be the result of a conflict over bad cannabis cuttings, sources from the Twente cannabis world told RTV Oost. Three suspects, a 57-year-old father and his two sons aged 30 and 32, bought a batch of cannabis cuttings that turned out to be of poor quality. They went to the grow shop to get their money back and things got out of hand, according to the broadcaster's sources.

On Sunday the Netherlands had an average precipitation shortage of 155 mm, placing 2018 officially in the 5 percent driest years since the beginning of rainfall measurements in 1906. That means that since 1906, only 5 percent of years were as dry in the Netherlands as it currently is, Weeronline reports.

The precipitation deficit is the difference between the amount of rainfall and evaporation. If more water evaporates than rain falls from the air, there is a precipitation deficit. If it is the other way around, there is a precipitation surplus.

Defense deployed two Chinook helicopters on Sunday to help the Twente fire department fight a large fire that broke out at the Twence dump in Hengelo on Saturday night. The helicopters flew over the dump time and again, pouring 10 thousand liters of water onto the fire each time, De Gelderlander reports.

There is a very good chance that this June may be the driest one for the Netherlands in a long time, possibly even since weather measurements started in 1901, according to weather services Weeronline and Weerplaza.

Especially the middle, west and southwest parts of the country are experiencing record drought, despite some rainfall over the past days. The biggest rain shortages are in Twente, the Achterhoek, the northern parts of the Veluwe and parts of Noord-Limburg.

New Year's celebrations with fireworks in the Netherlands generally go hand-in-hand with dozens of firework related injuries, and this year was no exception. The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam already admitted eight people with a total of 10 injured eyes. And dozens of people were admitted to hospital with burns and other firework related injuries.

The first night frost of the season happened in Twente overnight. According to Weerplaza, the mercury dropped to 2.3 degrees Celsius in Twente, and a low temperature of -1.2 degrees was measured at 10 centimeters above the grass.

The first frost of the season happened a bit later than last year, when the first below 0 temperatures of autumn were measured on October 6th. In 2015 the first frost was in September already.

A fire on a large pig farm in Agelo during the early hours of Monday morning killed hundreds of pigs. Two stables were completely destroyed, the fire department confirmed to ANP.

The fire started in one of the farm's two piglet stables. Firefighters tried to stop it spreading further, "but that did not work", a spokesperson said to the news wire. The fire spread to a second stable, also containing hundreds of pigs. The fire is now under control, but the fire department expects it will take another few hours to completely extinguish it.

Fashion chain Tuunte was declared bankrupt by the court in Zutphen on Tuesday, director Louis van Andel announced. He already informed the 250 employees working in the 45 Tuunte stores. The stores will likely remain open for the time being, and a bankruptcy administrator will investigate whether a restart is possible, ANP reports.

Gay couple Stefano Franke and Arnout Janssen had to give their two week old baby back to her surrogate mother after a DNA test proved that the woman's husband, and not Stefano, was the baby's father. The surrogate mother still can't believe that her husband is the little girl's father, the 27-year-old woman said to AD. "This was not premeditated", she said. But she is happy that baby Hayley is back where she belongs, with her parents, AD reports.

A gay couple from Twente had to give their baby up to her surrogate mother after it became clear that the woman's husband fathered the baby, and not one of the men in the gay couple, AD reports. 

The woman became pregnant in September. According to the newspaper, she performed the insemination herself, with sperm from the gay couple. Part of the surrogate agreement was that the woman would have only safe sex with her own husband while pregnant. Baby Hayley was born on May 8th. The Twente couple was present at the birth and took the baby home with them two days later.

The police have arrested a man from Denekamp, Twente, who is suspected to have been involved in ten recent wildfires in nature reserves in Noordoost-Twente. On Saturday April 29th, he was caught trying to flee the scene of the last fire of the past few days by a local hunting supervisor. At 20:00, he was found in his mother’s home after an extensive police effort using a helicopter set out to capture him.
