The organization behind the Tulp Festival Amsterdam says the sixth annual edition of the event will begin on March 31. Hundreds of thousands of tulips will again be planted at dozens of locations all around the Dutch capital, including outside all of the city’s train stations.
In the coming weeks Amsterdam will be extra bright and colorful thanks to over half a million tulips. The fifth Tulip Festival Amsterdam kicked off on Thursday and from this weekend the tulips should be visible in around 90 locations in the city, in the open ground and in pots, Het Parool reports.
The festival kicked off on Apollolaan on Thursday, where 25 thousand sustainably grown tulip bulbs were planted in November. The start included the baptism of a white 'Peace' tulip, in honor of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's bed-in protest in the nearby Hilton Hotel 50 years ago.
This spring was a record season for flowers in the Netherlands. Famous flower park Keukenhof in Lisse welcomed a record number of 1.4 million visitors. And the Amsterdam Tulip Festival featured over 550 blooming tulips.
The Keukenhof considered this a "top season", NU.nl reports. Due to a relatively cool spring, the flowers were in full bloom for eight weeks.
The third edition of the Amsterdam Tulp Festival was officially opened on Thursday. For this edition of the festival, which will run from April 1st to May 14th, a massive 500 thousand tulip bulbs were planted across the city. During the opening, the new Paleiskwartier association was introduced, with the group made up of organizations along the major Amsterdam streets of Damrak, Rokin, Kalverstraat and Nieuewndijk as well as Dam Square.
The second annual Tulp Festival kicked off on Friday in Amsterdam. Tulpen, or "tulips," are the famous symbol of the Netherlands, and they will blanket the capital city throughout the month of April.
Thousands of tulips are on display in locations across the city of Amsterdam as a part of the city’s Tulip Festival. Almost all museums, several hotels and other organizations are participating in providing their own tulip garden spots across the city.
