The police can partly be held liable for damages caused by a mass shooting in the Ridderhof shopping center in Alphen aan den Rijn in 2011, the court in The Hague ruled on Tuesday. Personal injury- and death damages can be claimed from the police, according to the court, NU.nl and NOS report.

The parents of Tristan van der Vlis is not responsible for their son killing five people and hurting 17 others in a shooting in Alphen aan den Rijn in 2011, the court in The Hague ruled on Wednesday. According to the court, Van der Vlis' parents couldn't know beforehand that their son was planning the mass shooting, ANP reports.

Victims of a shooting in the Ridderhof mall in Alphen aan den Rijn almost six years ago, are suing gunman Tristan van der Vlis's parents for compensation. They believe the parents deserve part of the blame for ignoring the signs that their son was derailing, AD reports.

The police ignored all the signals on the psychological problems of Ridderhof-shooter Tristan van der Vlis. Not only when granting him weapon licenses, but also twice afterwards in its renewal. This was the argument of the lawyers on behalf of 51 victims of the shooting in the court in the Hague this morning.

People who apply for a gun license in the future, will have to endure a much more intense screening. Those who want to own a weapon long term, such as hunters and hobby marksmen, will have to adhere to "very strict" safety demands.

Alphen aan den Rijn commemorates on Tuesday the shooting that took place two years ago in the shopping center Ridderhof.  At 12 noon there will be a private memorial service organized by the city for the survivors and victims. Bas Eenhoorn, mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn, will lay flowers together with the shopkeepers' association of Ridderhof.

In 2011 Tristan van der Vlis caused a massacre at the mall. In a hail of bullets, six innocent people were killed and 16 were injured. Van der Vlis then committed suicide at the checkout area of a supermarket.
