Preliminary research to The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn before its restoration starts in June 2019

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will start restoring Rembrandt van Rijn's famous painting The Night Watch in July next year. The painting will be restored in the hall where it's currently hanging, and visitors to the museum are welcome to watch the process. The restoration can also be followed online, the museum announced on Tuesday.

The Night Watch will be restored in a clear glass chamber designed by French architect Jean Michel Wilmotte. It's last major restoration happened 40 years ago, following an attack on the painting in 1975.

Photographer Erwin Olaf donated 412 photographs, seven videos and countless magazines to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The museum also bought 60 of his other photographs and three videos for 200 thousand euros, the Volkskrant reports. 

The Rijksmuseum will host an exhibition of Olaf's work next year. According to Olaf and the museum, the photographs are the "core collection" of his oeuvre. Every two years, the museum and Olaf will consult and decide what will be added to the collection.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is planning to hold an exhibition on the Netherlands' slavery history in 2020, director Taco Dibbits said to the Volkskrant on Friday. "In good and bad ways, it is all part of it and all must be shown", he said. 

The Rijksmuseum manages several objects that refer to the history of slavery. These include dioramas made of slave plantations, etchings and paintings depicting slaves and child slaves as servants in portraits of citizens. The museum also has a number of artworks showing the darker side of Dutch seafaring.

The Rijksmuseum bought an 18th century painting by Jean-Etienne Liotard titled Dutch girl at breakfast for nearly 5.2 million euros. The painting, which was owned by a British noble family for over 240 years, is the first purchase made by new director Taco Dibbits, the Telegraaf reports.

This week the British government issued an export license for the painting to be brought to the Netherlands.

After 60 years' absence, Rembrandt's wedding portraits of Maerten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit are back in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The two full length portraits arrived in the museum last night and are now hanging in a place of honor - next to the Night Watch in the museum's main hall

The supervisory board of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam appointed Taco Dibbits as the new director of the museum. He will be taking over from Wim Pijbes, who is leaving the museum to work at the Voorlinde museum for contemporary art end July

The Rijksmuseum has bought a bronze sculpture of the Dutchman Adriaen de Vries (1556 - 1626) for $28 million (more than 22.5 million euro). The sculpture is called Bacchic Figure Supporting the Globe.

Drawings and paintings from Professor of Art History, I.Q. van Regteren Altena, the oldest private, Dutch owned collection, will be auctioned. The artwork will be auctioned in four auctions in Amsterdam, London, and Paris, starting July.
