More than half of Dutch students loan more money from educational services department DUO than they need for their studies, according to a study Nibud published on Friday. Of these students, half loaned more money to save up for when they are done studying. The low interest rates on student loans is one reason for doing so, according to the researchers, NU.nl reports.

Eleven students and five teachers from the Strabrecht College in Geldorp were hospitalized after their school bus crashed into the back of a truck on the A16 between Duinkerken and Calais in France this morning, the school said in a statement on its website. The bus driver was critically injured and is in hospital in Lille.

When the basic study grant was abolished, the government promised that the money saved would be invested in education. The government is failing to live up to that promise, according to student organizations ISO and LSVB, RTL Nieuws reports.

According to the organizations, in the year 2000 the government spent nearly 20 thousand euros for each student at university. In 2025 that amount will be only 14,300 euros. There is also a decline for students attending colleges.

The participants of a fatal skiing holiday in the French Alps, organized by Christian student association Navigators, arrived back in Nijmegen on Thursday morning. At least two members of the group were killed in an avalanche on Tuesday, a third is still missing, the Telegraaf reports.

Radboud University in Nijmegen was the site of a shortly lived, but quite intense fire on Tuesday afternoon. According to the university, a cooling tower on the roof of the Spinoza building on Montessorilaan caught fire during maintenance work. The fire caused a lot of smoke and the building had to be evacuated, but no one was injured.

The fire was under control by 12:55 p.m. and by 1:15 p.m. eight of the nine floors in the building was released. Students, lecturers and staff were allowed back inside. The entire building was released by 14:35 p.m., the university said on Twitter.

International studnets who stay and work in the Netherlands after graduating provide 1.57 billion euros per year to the Dutch economy, according to calculations by EP-Nuffic based on figures from the government. An estimated 25 percent of international graduates stay in the Netherlands for the restof their lives, ANP reports.

Almost 75 thousand international sstudents are registered for a full degree at a Dutch university of college. Tey have 161 different nationalities.

A record number of about 265 thousand students were registered at Dutch universities this past academic year. That is a 2.5 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to the association of Dutch universities VSNU, ANP reports.

There was a hefty influx of foreign students as well as students transferring from VWO. The number of first year students in university courses increased by 9 percent to 52 thousand this academic year. The number of first-year undergraduate students increased in all sectors of education.

The hectic morning rush hour expected due to thousand of students protesting against NS on Tuesday, did not actually realize. All stations and trains were relatively quiet. NS calls it a regular Tuesday morning rush hour.

Thousands of students will be using the rail transport in protest against NS' plan to ask universities and colleges to change their lesson schedules so students can travel outside rush hour. They hope that this will relieve some pressure on overcrowded trains.

Some 27 thousand students are ready to descent on NS trains during morning rush hour on Tuesday, according to the Facebook page for the protest. This is in protest against NS' plan to have students travel outside rush hours by changing their class schedules. In this way NS hopes to relieve some pressure on overcrowded trains.
