The Netherlands made 45 million euros available for cleaning up landmines in former conflict areas, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday. The Ministry is investing the money in three demining projects operating in a total of 13 countries.

Dozens of passenger planes are still flying over war zones and conflict areas - such as Mali, South Sudan and Sinai - on a daily basis. This includes airlines KLM and Air France as well as other European airlines such as Lufthansa and British Airways.

Fundraising to assist those children will be the focus of this year's Glass House marathon radio broadcast, taking place later this year in Heerlen.

A group of water engineers, led by Dutch engineering firm Grontmij, has come up with a plan to prevent the refugee camp in the South Sudanese town Bentiu turning into a swamp during the raining seasons. The project is estimated to cost 20 million euros, of which the Netherlands will contribute 5.4 million. Other financiers include the United Nations, the European Union and Switzerland.
