Teenagers in the Netherlands are turning their backs on Facebook in favor of other social media platforms, Instagram and Snapchat in particular, according to the National Social Media Study 2018 by Newcom Research. Now only 43 percent of Dutch between the ages of 15 and 19 years use Facebook on a daily basis, compared to 68 percent in 2016, Marketingfacts.nl reports.
A 19-year-old man from Bavel has been in custody for three and a half months on suspicion of raping a 12-year-old girl and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. He also had nude photos of dozens of other young girls in his possession, which the authorities believe he convinced them to send him through online chats. The youngest victim is 8-years-old, BN DeStem reports.
People on social media identified the man who was killed in a shooting in Rotterdam on Sunday night as screen name Parsa010, AD reports. The police haven't confirmed his identity yet, but there are many posts about his death on Instagram, Facebook and other social media platforms.
One in 15 Dutch teens (6.4 percent) sent a sexual photo to someone else on social media at least once, according to a survey by Bureau Jeugd & Media among a thousand kids aged between 12 and 17 years, NOS reports.
Sexting, sharing sexually explicit photos via social media, is especially popular among 16 and 17 year olds, the survey found. In this age group 14.5 percent have sent a sexual photo at least once. 40 percent said that they've received requests for naked photos of themes elves. Teens send these photos to their friends, but often also to people they only know online.
Snapchat recently announced that it putting stricter measures in place against misleading or incorrect news articles on Snapchat Discover, the app's news section. This is good news for the nearly 1.9 million Dutch who have Snapchat - one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the Nethrlands - installed on their phones.
The platform grew from around 500 thousand daily users in 2015 to 960 thousand last year, according to iPhoned.nl. Only Instagram is doing better, with its daily users increasing from 992 thousand to 1.5 million in the same period.
