Wednesday marks five years since the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) over conflict-hit Ukraine on 17 July 2014.

MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, with 283 passengers, including 80 children, and 15 crew members on board.

Four suspects will be prosecuted for murder in connection with the downing of flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine in July 2014, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) announced in a press conference on Wednesday. The trial against the four suspects will be held in the Netherlands, starting in March 2020. “We now have the information, have the proof, that the Russian Federation is involved in this tragedy, in this crime, one way or another.” Dutch Prosecutor Fred Westerbeke said in the press conference.

Prosecutors in the Netherlands are expected to announce its first criminal case in the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, sources close to the investigation reportedly told broadcaster RTL Nieuws. The Boeing passenger jet was shot down by a Russian buk missile while flying over eastern Ukraine, officials have said.

There are "new developments" in the investigation into the downing of flight MH17, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) said on Friday in an email sent to the relatives of the people who were killed in the disaster, RTL Nieuws reports.

Exactly what these new developments are, is not yet clear. The JIT will first inform the relatives on Wednesday. After that an international press conference will be held at 1:00 p.m.

The search in the Indian Ocean for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been called off, the three involved countries, China, Malaysia and Australia, announced. The plane has not been found. Ships searching for the missing plane, including those of Dutch company Fugro, are being recalled, AD reports.

Relatives and friends of people who died in flight MH17 are generally satisfied with the investigation results the Joint Investigation Team revealed on Wednesday. The JIT revealed that flight MH17 was shot down by a BUK missile transported from Russia to a pro-Russian separatist controlled field and then back to Russia again.

A court forced the Ministry of Security and Justice to publish more documents on the disaster with flight MH17 thanks to a joint call on the Freedom of Information Act by broadcasters NOS and RTL Nieuws and the Volkskrant. A number of new details were revealed, including that the Dutch government assumed from the first that Russian separatists were behind the downing of the plane.

On Sunday the Netherlands commemorated the second anniversary of the disaster with Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. Over 800 friends and family members of victims gathered in Vijfhuizen, near Schiphol airport, to remember and honor their loved ones.

A group of 18 families, frustrated by the Netherlands’ slow pace at investigating the crash of flight MH17, are calling on Prime Minister Mark Rutte to pressure Russia, Ukraine, and the United States into releasing raw radar images taken on the day of the crash. They are angered that Russia vetoed a proposal last July to try suspects in the MH17 explosion at the International Criminal Court, and that it will still take another six months before the Netherlands decides how to proceed with a prosecution, if any is to take place.

Malaysia Airlines will no longer be flying to Amsterdam and Paris from next year. The airline singed a cooperation agreement with the Arabic Emirates and most of its Europe flights will in future be done only in cooperation with the Arabic airline.

A Boeing 777 was shot down by a missile over east Ukraine on July 17, 2014, the Dutch Safety Board announced in their final report into the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. "Flight MH17 crashed as a result of the detonation of a warhead outside the airplane," tearing off the front portion of the aircraft, the Board concluded.

Shrapnel from a Buk missile was found in the bodies of victims from the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash, according to a Ukrainian investigator that was formerly part of the international team researching the cause of the disaster. The revelation comes just one week before the Dutch Safety Board releases their final report on the July 2014 Boeing 777 crash in eastern Ukraine.

The Dutch broadcaster NOS, who was nominated for the airing of the National Day of Mourning after the downing of Maylasian Flight MH17, was competing with three other non-American contenders for the award. On Friday it will be exactly one year since the Malaysia Airlines flight crashed down on eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

The anonymous group of people who put up 47 million dollars for concrete evidence about suspects responsible for bringing down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 say they have the information they wanted, German private investigator Josef Resch says, according to newspaper Der Spiegel. Resch claims he was hired by the group to ferret out details and verify information they obtained.

Russian opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta claims to have obtained a confidential analytical report on the MH17 crash that suggests it was a BUK-M1 missile that shot down the plane. The newspaper believes it is likely a report by official Russian military experts, and will be submitted to Dutch and international experts investigating the crash.

A Dutch Hercules C-130 aircraft landed in Eindhoven shortly before 4 p.m. carrying seven coffins with human remains from the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 plane crash in eastern Ukraine. The military transport plane’s landing marked the official end of the MH17 international recovery effort, 290 days after the tragedy.

The salvage mission in eastern Ukraine where flight MH17 crashed last year, has been completed. The last seven coffins are expected to arrive at Eindhoven airport at 16:00 on Saturday afternoon. From there they will be transported with the usual ceremony.
