Former PvdA State Secretary Dick Benschop will be the new CEO of Royal Schiphol Group, the board of the airport confirmed in a press release on Monday. He will succeed Jos Nijhuis on May 1st, ANP reports.

Benschop, 60, currently works at Royal Dutch Shell. Between 1998 and 2002 he was State Secretary of Foreign Affairs in the Kok II government.

Schiphol CEO Jos Nijhuis will be succeeded by a man, Nijhuis said to the Volkskrant. The airport wants to employ a male CEO, rather than a woman, because otherwise there will be more women on the board than men.

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam overtook Heathrow airport in London as the European airport that offers the most direct flights, according to a new report by industry organization ACI Europe, Het Parool reports.

The Amsterdam airport is now the European airport that offers the most direct flights with 4,861 direct flights a week. That is a 20 percent increase compared to 10 years ago. Heathrow reduced the number of direct flights slightly during the same time period. As dit other rivals like Charles de Gaulle in Paris.

Schiphol Airport will open all security gates in Departure Hall 1 during the summer season to help deal with the expected crowds. All security gates in Departure Hall 2 will also be opened if necessary, the airport announced following consultations between State Secretary Sharon Dijksma of Infrastructure, Schiphol CEO Jos Nijhuis and KLM CEO Pieter Elbers, NU.nl reports.

It seems that crowded halls, long lines and hours of waiting times at Schiphol airport are here to stay. According to CEO Jos Nijhuis, travelers face at least another 100 "black Saturdays" at the airport this year, and the coming two years will probably be busier. There is no escaping it, he said according to newspaper AD.

With the opening of a new, temporary departure hall on Wednesday, Schiphol hopes to avoid chaos with the ever increasing number of passengers this summer. But despite this measure, the airport will remain crowded, CEO Jos Nijhuis warned. The number of passengers is growing rapidly and Schiphol is actually ill-equipped to handle it, he said to NOS.

With terrorist threats, a centennial celebration, strikes and a 9.1 percent increase in passengers, Schiphol airport has a very busy year behind it. And 2017 will be even busier, CEO Jos Nijhuis expects. But the number of Koninklijke Marechaussee officers responsible for safety at the airport did not grow with the busyness of Schiphol. According to Nijhuis, the airport needs between 400 and 500 extra Marechaussee officers, he said to the Financieele Dagblad on Monday.

Budget airline Ryanair has big ambitions for the new Lelystad airport, commercial director David O'Brien said in an interview with the Telegraaf. "We want all the slots, if the price is right. In a few years we will bring 2 million passengers to Lelystad." he said to the newspaper. 

The Irish airline is seeing strong growth in the Netherlands and plans to put 8 perecent more seats in the market next year. Ryanair is currently very active at Eindhoven Airport and recently started flying from Schiphol too. Lelystad airport is set to open in two years, accordding to the newspaper.

Airlines KLM, Corendon and TUIfly are expected to call on their passengers to arrive at Schiphol airport as much as four hours before their flight, instead of the standard two or three hours, because of staff shortages in the Marechaussee, the military policing force responsible for security at the airport. Long queues and delays are expected at the entrance to the secured areas of the airport, and at the passport controls for those leaving the Schengen Area.

Schiphol airport is expanding. The airport and KLM reached an agreement for the transfer of a KLM building, where Schiphol plans to build a new terminal which should increase the number of passengers to 62 million. The first phase of the expansion, a new pier, will open in 2019.
