The police arrested two teenagers in Wassenaar suspected of scamming people selling second hand goods on sites like Marktplaats using a fake banking app to fake bank transfers, the police said in a statement on Monday.
The police received about 43 thousand reports of internet scams in 2014. Most of them involved buying and selling frauds with phones and entrance tickets for concerts, events and theme parks.
Dutch people reported almost 8 million euros worth of internet fraud to the police last year. A total of nearly 44 thousand reports were made. This is evident from the annual figures of Reporting point Internet Scams, set up by the police to counter internet fraud.
More than a million Dutch people have been the victim of internet fraud in the last two years. In total the victims have been scammed out of more than 5 billion euros. This is evident from research done by the Fraud Help Desk, the national reporting point for questions and reports on fraud.
