A professor at the university medical center in Maastricht is no longer the head of the Transplantation Immunology department after a flood of criticism on his behavior. Former employees call working under him "North Korean conditions" and accuse him of mistreating coworkers and PhD students for years, NOS reports. 

It is not clear whether this professor was dismissed as department head, or stepped down on his own. He still works at the hospital, but only as a researcher and as supervisor for PhD students, according to the broadcaster.

Interim Amsterdam mayor Jozias van Aartsen wants to implement firework-free zones around hospitals and nursing homes in the Dutch capital next year, he said in an interview with the Telegraaf.

According to Van Aartsen, such firework-free zones resulted in a drastic reduction in firework related problems and incidents in The Hague, where he was previously mayor. The Amsterdam city council already approved expanding these zones in the city, he said to the newspaper.

The police in Thailand arrested a Dutch man in Surin for involvement in the murders of a woman and her son. The Dutch man was arrested in a hospital, where he was being treated for injuries the authorities believe he sustained in the struggle with the murder victims, RTL Nieuws reports.

The 57-year-old woman and her 30-year-old son were stabbed to death in their home. Eyewitnesses saw the Dutch man drive away from the home on a motorcycle. 

The Dutch man told the hospital that he sustained his injuries in a traffic accident, according to the broadcaster.

Several people were injured in a fight on Torenstraat in the Groningen village of Beerta on Wednesday night. According to the police, shots were fired. A total of five people were arrested, ANP reports.

Multiple people were taken to hospital with unknown injuries. Exactly how many people got hurt, and whether anyone was actually shot, is unclear. The police believe the victims and perpetrators know each other and that the cause of the incident is in the relationship sphere.

In Venlo a police car crashed into a pole after the officer driving had to swerve out to avoid another police car. Two police officers were taken to the hospital, NOS reports.

The accident happened around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The officers were responding to a report of a break in at a supermarket in Horst. 

The car that crashed into the pole sustained severe damage. The extent of the officers injuries is unknown.

No one was arrested for the break in, a police spokesperson said to NOS.

At least 15 Dutch hospitals were hit in ransomware attacks over the past three years, NOS reports based on a survey in which 25 hospitals participated anonymously. The hospitals insisted on staying anonymous out of fear of attracting hackers, according to the broadcaster. Another 20 hospitals refused to participate at all due to this concern.

The Amsterdam police had to close down the Van Hogendorpplein and a number of surrounding streets on Thursday morning because a seemingly disturbed man was throwing bricks from the roof of the Westerpark school. It took firefighters and a police negotiator over an hour to talk him down, Het Parool reports.

The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance. His condition is unknown.

Local residents told Het Parool that the man lives on nearby Van der Duinstraad and has mental health problems. His neighbors describe him as flirty and "eccentric".

A fire in a Breda apartment on Sunday night, seems to have been set during an argument between the residents. Investigators believe this to be a case of arson and domestic violence, the police said on Twitter.

The apartment's female resident was arrested, the man was taken to hospital. Prior to the fire in the apartment on Nieuwe Diesstraat, the couple was heard arguing, Omroep Brabant reports.

The involved apartment burnt out completely. And the apartment above it sustained smoke damage. Firefighters managed to save the rest of the building from any significant damage.

A 40-year-old man died in Rotterdam early Wednesday morning after being arrested by the police. The healthcare institution where the man was housed had called the police because he was causing problems there, a police report said.. When the police arrived at the facility, staff already had the man under control, Dutch authorities claimed.

His condition worsened shortly after the police cuffed him and took him away. The officers then tried to resuscitate the man and he was rushed to the hospital, where he died at about 1 a.m.

Authorities in Zaandam arrested two teens in connection with the stabbing death of 16-year-old secondary student Nick Bood. An accident involving a motorcycle and at least three cars closed the A1 highway towards Amsterdam between Naarden-West and Diemen on Thursday morning. Traffic information service VID calls it a "serious accident" and expects it to cause many traffic problems.

By around 6:30 a.m. the traffic jam behind the accident was already 7 kilometers long, according to VID on Twitter. Motorists are advised to detour via Utrecht over the A27, A12 and A2. It is unclear how long the road will be closed.

Two young girls from Zwanenburg, who were hospitalized on Monday after the took pills they found on the street, are doing "reasonably well", the police said in a statemetn. They are both still in the hospital, the mother of one of the girls said to RTV Noord-Holland. 

The families of the two kids, 12-year-old Luca and 11-year-old Lina, were informed that their children took ecstasy, the mother Donata said to AD. She added that both girls are conscious and communicating.

Baby Tim was so excited to meet the world that he could not wait for his mom to reach the hospital. He was born just after midnight on Sunday morning on the A2 highway near Vught, surrounded by police officers holding umbrellas to protect mom, midwife and baby from the rain. Both mom and baby are doing well.
