Thijs H., who is suspected of killing three people in dog walking areas in Scheveningen and Heerlen, was remanded into another 14 days of custody on Wednesday. The 27-year-old man from The Hague will be admitted to the Pieter Baan Center for psychological observation, the examining magistrate decided, NU.nl reports.

H. is suspected of killing three people. He is facing charges of murder or manslaughter, depending on whether premeditation can be proven.

A silent march for a man and woman found murdered in Brunssummerheide last week that was scheduled for Friday, has been canceled, the municipality of Heerlen said on Facebook. The families of the 68-year-old man and 63-year-old woman said that they are not prepared to handle a silent march yet.

One of the two victims killed in a stabbing at a dog park in Brunssummerheide on Tuesday was 63-year-old Diny who lived around the corner from the nature reserve. Local residents describe her as a very normal grandmother who did volunteer work. She was happily married, regularly went traveling in their camper, and "wouldn't hurt a fly", people who knew her and her husband told De Stentor.

The two former students, who studied in the same faculty as H. in the 2014/2015 academic year, knew him as soft-natured and friendly, if somewhat of a wallflower, Omroep West reports.

Police released an urgent public appeal at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, looking for anyone who can help track down an individual they say is responsible for three fatal stabbings in two incidents separated by over 200 kilometers. By 10:30 p.m., the man was arrested in the southern portion of the Limburg province, police said in an update.

Two people were found killed in a nature preserve near Heerlen. The man and woman were the victims of an act of violence at the Brunssummerheide, police in the Limburg province said.

A person walking in the nature area found the woman's lifeless body along with a dog and called police just before noon. About 30 minutes later a dead man was found near the first crime scene, which was then reported in to police. He also was accompanied by a dog.

The police station on Stationstraat in Heerlen was evacuated for several hours due to a hand grenade. A man showing disturbed behavior left a grenade at the station, NU.nl reports.

The police station was evacuated at around 5:00 p.m. The Ministry of Defense's explosive removal department investigated, determined that it was indeed a real hand grenade, and removed the explosion. The station was released again at around 8:30 p.m.

The man was arrested and taken to a hospital. After treatment, he was brought back to the police station for questioning.

There was a shooting incident in Heerlen shortly before midnight on Sunday. So far it is unclear whether anyone was hurt, or what the motive for the shooting was. The police are looking for three people, according to a Burgernet report shared on Twitter.

The police are looking for two men and one woman. One of the men wore white trousers with a red stripe. How they are involved in the shooting, is not clear. 

The shooting happened on Hofstraat, according to 1Limburg.

This happened after the leak of a report on a meeting about a joint service office for Maastricht, Heerlen and Sittard-Geleen. The report referred to the possible dismissal of the critical officials, AD reports.

A 31-year-old man was injured in a shooting on Jos Cuypersstraat in Heerlen on Sunday evening. The police responded to the scene at around 6:10 p.m. Two shots were fired at the man, the police said.

A suspect was arrested shortly after the incident. He did not resist, according to the police. 

The victim was taken to hospital. The severity of his injuries is unclear.

A forensic investigation was done at the scene and the police spoke to witnesses and local residents. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

The Dutch provinces, transport regions and municipalities are pushing 245 million euros into getting more people to use their bicycles to get to work. In June State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure announced that the government is investing 100 million euros into measures to promote cycling, RTL Nieuws reports.

The government aims to convince 200 thousand extra people to use their bicycle for their daily commute. To achieve this, the government is investing into making cycling more attractive.

Heerlen and Landgraaf in Limburg were hit by four light earthquakes on Monday morning. The first quake had a magnitude of 2.4 and happened at a depth of 5 kilometers at Heerlen.

The subsequent quakes happened deeper and had magnitudes of 1.5, 1.9 and 1.3 on the Richter scale, according to measurements by meteorological institute KNMI, NU.nl reports.

The earthquakes were hardly felt and such earthquakes rarely cause damage to buildings.

A 34-year-old man from Heerlen turned himself in to the police in Amsterdam in connection with a fatal crash that left one man dead and three persons critically injured near the Pinkpop festival in Landgraaf on Monday morning, the authorities announced in a press conference at noon. Whether this was an accident or a deliberate attack, is still under investigation.

The number of children in the Netherlands growing up in a family that receives welfare benefits increased by 2.1 percent to a total of 230 thousand last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday. This number increased every year since 2012. 

More than two thirds of children who lived on welfare last year had an immigration background. Half of this group fall under the "other non-western category", compared to 39 percent in 2012. In this category the stats office includes all non-western countries except Morocco, Suriname, Turkey, Aruba and the former Dutch Antilles.

The Public Prosecutor postponed a massive DNA kinship investigation in the 1998 murder of 11-year-old Nicky Verstappen with a few months. The investigation was set to start after the summer, but has now been pushed back to the first quarter of 2018, AD reports.

The postponement is due to the judiciary getting new and more efficient DNA sets soon and because preparation is taking longer than expected.

The help offered to 15-year-old Tharukshan Selvam, who committed suicide early this year after being bullied, fell short, the Youth Care Inspectorate concluded in a report published on Tuesday.
