Heerlen man, 40, named as suspect in murder of his 62-year-old

The 40-year-old man arrested in connection with the death of a 62-year-old woman in Heerlen, Limburg, is the victim’s son, the Public Prosecution Service has stated. He is facing charges of manslaughter.

The suspect, identified by local media outlet De Limburger as Marcel B., was arrested at 4 p.m. on Monday after the victim’s body was found the night before in a home on Klompstraat in Heerlen. Investigators immediately suspected foul play and remain at the home conducting their investigation.

On Wednesday, it was decided that B. would remain in custody for at least another 14 days. No reports have been made regarding the suspect’s motive.

De Limburger reported that B. has struggled with drug addiction for years. In October 2017, he shared on social media that he had been in rehab for his addiction to amphetamines.

The home where the woman was found was registered in her name; B. was not registered at the location. Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the victim at the scene, but were unsuccessful.

One of the victim’s children posted about the loss on social media Monday evening: “Since yesterday, we have been living in a terrible nightmare. Dear Mom, we miss you terribly. It’s horrifying and surreal how you have been taken from us. We love you.”
