Woman convicted of murder of mental health worker, sentenced to 18 years in prison

Meriam K. has been sentenced to 18 years in prison along with compulsory psychiatric treatment at a TBS facility for fatally stabbing mental health Melanie Vrancken in April 2024 on the grounds of the psychiatric institution Mondriaan in Heerlen. The court found her guilty of murder. The sentence is higher than the 12 years in prison with psychiatric treatment that the Public Prosecution Service had recommended.

K., 31, had previously been a patient of Vrancken, 39. On April 15, 2024, she attacked the healthcare worker with a knife, and Vrancken succumbed to her injuries on April 23. K. claimed she had no memory of the stabbing. The Pieter Baan Center concluded that she was “severely diminished in her criminal responsibility” when she committed the act.

However, the court ruled that K. acted deliberately. She pursued Vrancken with a knife, leading the court to conclude that she had time to reflect on her actions and their consequences. K. then disposed of the knife in a pond. The court stated that these actions show “intentionality, not a sudden outburst of anger.”

Meriam K. had reportedly developed a long-standing obsession with the nursing specialist, fueled by a rejected treatment relationship and frustration over her discharge from Mondriaan.

During the trial, Melanie Vrancken’s family, her husband and two young children, made use of their right to address the court. The court considered the profound impact of the murder heavily in its sentencing, describing it as an “irreparable loss” and highlighting the traumatic effect on the children. K. was also ordered to pay the family 260,000 euros in damages to compensate for both material and emotional suffering.

The case has sent shockwaves through the mental healthcare sector, raising concerns about the safety of staff. Healthcare workers at Mondriaan and other institutions, including Lionarons, Care+ in Limburg, and Pro Persona in Gelderland and Utrecht held a two-minute work stoppage to honor Vrancken and protest rising violence against healthcare staff.
