More than half of athletes in the Netherlands are not aware of the risks of overheating - they do not adjust their training programs in warm weather and think that overheating can't happen to them, the Red Cross reports based on its own research. While athletes know that overheating is possible, they don't know that it can also happen at lower temperatures, NOS reports.

A total of 34 children and two staff members became ill at a campsite in Leusden on Thursday due to the heat. They were all taken to hospital. The organizers of the camp cut the summer camp short and sent the remaining children home, NU.nl reports.

The sick kids were taken to the University Medical Center in Utrecht. Most of them were sent home after a check-up, but four had to spend the night in hospital for observation. Parents of the affected children were asked to go directly to the hospital and collect their children there.

The Ministry of Defense acknowledged liability for the death of 20-year-old Koninklijke Marechaussee officer Kelvin Bosman in 2016. The young man became unwell during the final exercise of his basic training to become a Marechaussee and later died of the consequences of heat exhaustion, NOS reports.

Summer temperatures of up to 33 degrees expected in the Netherlands this week triggered national health institute RIVM to issue a heat warning for most of the Netherlands. The heat warning is in effect for the seven provinces in central and southern Netherlands between Monday and Thursday, NU.nl reports.

A Dutch bred police dog died of heat exhaustion during a police chase in Texas on Tuesday, the Arlington police said on Twitter.
