Schiphol can expand with takeoff and landing strips on the coast, residents living around the Amsterdam airport state in a report that will be handed to Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure and Water Management on Tuesday. They hope that this report will prompt the minister to investigate alternatives to growing the airport in its current location, BNR reports.

During the run up to New Year's Eve and a few days after, over 53,000 complaints were reported to a website devoted to logging fireworks nuisances in the Netherlands. The registration had a 10 percent increase in complaints over a year ago, suggesting that either people are more frequently annoyed by fireworks, or more people know about the website created by 30 local GroenLinks party factions.

The annual hotline for reporting fireworks problems opened on Christmas day. By 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, over 2,500 complaints were received.

The hotline is an initiative by 30 local GroenLinks factions, including those in Rotterdam, The Hague and Groningen. The hotline was first launched six years ago. GroenLinks uses complaints received to map areas where fireworks cause the most problems, and to support their call for banning consumer fireworks.

By the end of this government's term in 2021, the energy bill for Dutch households will be on average 175 euros more expensive than this year, Minister Eric Wiebes of Economic Affairs and Climate said in a parliamentary debate on Thursday. Next year, households can expect an average energy bill increase of 45 euros, NU.nl reports.

Wiebes emphasized that this is an estimate, but if there is no change in policy, households can take these increases into account.

The Amsterdam city council meeting was suspended for a time on Thursday afternoon while three men dressed as blackface Zwarte Pieten, complete with gold rings in their ears and red lips, were removed from the public gallery. Officially they were removed because the blackface makeup made them unrecognizable and they thereby violated a ban on wearing face-covering clothing in public buildings, AD reports.

Parliamentarians Corinne Ellemeet of GroenLinks, Nine Kooman of SP and Sharon Dijksma of the PvdA presented a list of over 20 proposals on how to do so, including banning pharmaceuticals from sponsoring patient associations, NOS reports.

The parties' plans mainly have to do with taxes and climate.

She finds the question of who will be Amsterdam's mayor now that terminally ill Eberhard van der Laan stepped down "very uncomfortable", AT5 reports.

Minister Ronald Plasterk of Home Affairs decided to pull the plug on the modernization of the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP), previously called the population register. According to the Minister, the project turned out to be much more expensive and time-consuming than estimated and is not worth pursuing. He called it a "sad conclusion" on Wednesday night, ANP reports.
