Alma-Tadema: classic seduction exhibition in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden

The Fries Museum won a Global Fine Art Award in New York for its exhibition of work by Dronryp born artist Lourens Alma-Tadema (1836-1912). In the museum world, this award is also known as a 'museum Oscar', NOS reports.

The exhibition, titled Alma-Tadema: classic seduction, featured more than 80 works showing scenes from Antiquity. It attracted more than 158 thousand visitors this winter, a record for the Fries Museum.

A lost painting by Dutch-British painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema surfaced in the BBC television program Antiques Roadshow. In the broadcast on Sunday, the painting was valued at 350 thousand euros.

The Fries Museum in Leeuwarden recently acquired the original death sentence order for Dutch spy Mata Hari, the museum announced on Tuesday. The document is currently on display in the Mata Hari presentation on the first floor of the museum.

The Fries Museum took home one of the country's most prestigious prizes for the museum world last week, winning the 100,000-euro BankGiro Lottery Museum prize (Museumprijs). Based in Leeuwarden, Friesland, the museum won the most public votes -more than 40 percent of the total- to beat the two other finalists, Zeeuws Museum (32.2%) in Middelburg, Zeeland and the Amsterdam Museum (27.6%) in the country's capital.

On the first day of the new Fries Museum in Leeuwarden 8,132 visitors showed up to take look at the building and the exhibits. There was no admission fee and the museum was open until 20:00h.
