There is a strong desire among Dutch farmers to reform the agricultural sector so that it uses climate-friendly methods, according to an opinion poll among Dutch farmers by Geleen Consultancy on behalf of newspaper Trouw.

The researchers asked farmers about their own welfare, the current agricultural sector and their ideas for the future. Only 6 percent of respondents said they currently work organically. But over 80 percent said they want to switch to climate-friendly methods.

Nearly all shareholders of Shell voted against a resolution by action group Follow This on Tuesday. The resolution called on Shell to impose stricter environmental targets. Almost 95 percent of the cast votes were against the resolution, ANP reports.

Between the years 2000 and 2016, companies in the Netherlands' production methods have become cleaner and they used relatively less raw materials. Companies that are involved in environmental protection and natural resources are also doing well - their production and employment opportunities increased, Statistics Netherlands reported in its Green Growth report on Monday.

D66 parliamentarian Salima Belhaj thinks that the Dutch military must be made more sustainable, for example by using hybrid trucks instead of diesel or letting soldiers on mission grow part of their food there. She is submitting a set of proposals on how to achieve this to Minister Ank Bijleveld of Defense on Tuesday, she said in an interview with newspaper Trouw.

The use of plastic bags dropped 71 percent since the Dutch government , according to a report commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment on the results of the ban. Some 300 retailers were questioned about their experience with the free plastic bag ban, NU.nl reports.

Lables saying "sustainably caught" or "caught with respect for nature" on canned tuna are often not true, according to environmental organization Greenpeace on Monday. Tuna are still often caught in a way that is damaging to the environment and other marine animals like sharks, the Telegraaf reports.

The environmental organization looked into seven canned tuna producers in the Netherland to find out which tuna they use and how exactly the fish are caught. Six of the seven producers sell canned tuna that were caught in a way that is damaging to the environment.

The ban on free plastic shopping bags, implemented on January 1st, is bearing fruit of success. Since the implementation, all retailers report a decrease in plastic bag consumption of at least 50 percent, some large retailers even go as far as 85 percent, Trouw reports based on own investigation.

Researchers from the Wageningen University have come up with a promising and environmentally friendly way to combat ticks. Experiments have shown that nematodes, minuscule worms, can kill ticks within 10 days. Ticks have become an increasing problem over the past years because they cause Lyme disease.
