The number of cheese shops in Amsterdam increased massively over the past decade, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. At the start of this year there were 55 cheese stores in the Dutch capital, an 80 percent increase compared to 2007. Nationwide the number of cheese stores increased 27 percent.

Dutch cheese and chicken may be at the center of a fraudulent trade scheme that made hundreds of thousands of euros. The Danish police believe that this money was used to fund terrorist groups, Dutch newspaper AD reports.

We like homemade food, a lot. Years ago I lived in the UK, and food over there was not as it is now. I recall dreadful trips to the supermarket where fresh food was nowhere to be seen. Local markets were not that appealing, and "organic" or "fresh" produce were words most people could not understand.

A dangerous variant of Escherichia coli (E. coli) has been discovered in a raw milk cheese with the brand name Roquefort. This is according to the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) based on information received from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).

Several companies put animal ingredients in their foods, without stating this on the label. Food watchdog Foodwatch is sounding the alarm, because vegetarians, Islamic and Jewish communities in The Netherlands are being duped, unable to properly follow the guidelines of their beliefs, De Volkskrant reports.

Various French cheeses sold in the Netherlands have been found to contain traces of the E coli bacterium that can cause severe food poisoning. The Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has today issued a security warning advising consumers not to consume cheese from the producers Étoile du Vercors.
