The number of cheese shops in Amsterdam increased massively over the past decade, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. At the start of this year there were 55 cheese stores in the Dutch capital, an 80 percent increase compared to 2007. Nationwide the number of cheese stores increased 27 percent.
Dutch cheese and chicken may be at the center of a fraudulent trade scheme that made hundreds of thousands of euros. The Danish police believe that this money was used to fund terrorist groups, Dutch newspaper AD reports.

Various French cheeses sold in the Netherlands have been found to contain traces of the E coli bacterium that can cause severe food poisoning. The Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has today issued a security warning advising consumers not to consume cheese from the producers Étoile du Vercors.
