People in the Netherlands donated a total of some 2.4 million euros to help with the bush fires in Australia. The Red Cross opened giro 5125 for donations eleven days ago and since raised nearly 1.2 million euros. The World Wild Life fund's action also raised over a million euros.
Two firefighters were injured during an incident involving a knife inside the Amsterdam Fire Department station on Marnixstraat. One of the two later died in what police said was a suspected suicide.
Emergency services workers tried to revive that person on the street, but they died at the scene, broadcaster AT5 reported.
The injured person was taken to an area hospital, and is not in a life-threatening condition, according to newspaper Parool. The fire station was deactivated until a new crew can be brought in to take over operations, the newspaper said.
For years the Amsterdam fire brigade made extra payments to staff against the rules, according to a report by the forensic investigation office Integis. A total of nearly 4 million euros was illegally paid out to firefighters and other staff members, Integis concluded after launching an investigation at the request of local safety office Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland.
