Netherlands set for week of heat and sunshine before storms bring cooler weather
The Netherlands will experience a prolonged period of sunny and hot weather starting after early Sunday morning, with temperatures climbing above 30 degrees Celsius in parts of the country through Thursday. A code yellow heat warning remains in effect Sunday morning for Overijssel, Gelderland, Utrecht, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Zeeland, and Zuid-Holland.
Sunday begins with low clouds in the northeast, while most of the country will see sunshine. According to weeronline, the remaining cloud cover will quickly clear, and the northwest may see some medium and high clouds moving in from the sea.
Temperatures will rise during the afternoon. It will reach 27 degrees in Utrecht, 28 to 29 degrees in the east, and 29 to locally 32 degrees in the south. Coastal areas and regions near the IJsselmeer will remain cooler, with temperatures between 20 and 24 degrees because of a strong northerly wind.
During the warmest periods of the afternoon, the heat stress level will reach 6 to 7. The strong summer sun will increase the risk of sunburn, especially during the afternoon hours. People spending time outdoors, especially at the coast, will need to account for both the strong northerly wind and intense July sunshine. Without sunscreen, skin can burn within 10 to 20 minutes, and the wind can make people notice the effects too late.
Sunday evening will remain sunny, with mostly clear skies across much of the Netherlands. Low clouds will return from the sea in northern areas and may spread inland overnight. Some regions could become foggy, while the far south is expected to remain clear. Temperatures will fall to 14 to 17 degrees as the northerly wind weakens.
Monday will start with widespread low clouds and some fog, especially in the north. Limburg will remain sunny. The cloud cover will gradually disappear during the morning, leading to another sunny afternoon.
Temperatures on Monday afternoon will reach 22 to 25 degrees along the coast and 28 to 31 degrees inland. Some clouds may develop in the northeast, while the far south could see thin high clouds. Winds will remain moderate inland and stronger along the coast.
Monday evening will stay warm and sunny. Temperatures will remain between 20 and 22 degrees in the north and 25 to 28 degrees in central and southern areas during the middle of the evening. More clouds will move in overnight into Tuesday, with a chance of an isolated light shower. Minimum temperatures will remain between 16 and 19 degrees.
From Tuesday through Thursday, summer conditions will reportedly intensify as winds shift to the east. This will bring warmer weather to both inland areas and the beaches. Tuesday temperatures will reach around 27 degrees in the Kop van Noord-Holland and 29 to 33 degrees elsewhere.
Similar temperatures are expected on Wednesday and Thursday. The days will be dominated by sunshine, with only occasional areas of high clouds. Nights will also become warmer, with minimum temperatures between 16 degrees in the north and 19 to 21 degrees in southern regions.
The weather pattern is expected to change from Thursday evening as the atmosphere is set to become more unstable. Rain and thunderstorms are likely to develop. Friday may bring scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Netherlands before the hot air mass is pushed away.
