Cape Town FC signs Dutch footballer jailed for killing boy, 4, in car crash

Dutch footballer Rai Vloet (31) is resuming his professional football career after serving his prison sentence for killing a 4-year-old in a drunk-driving car crash. He has signed a contract with Cape Town City FC in South Africa, the club announced on Facebook.

Vloet caused an accident on the A4 near Hoofddorp on November 14, 2021. He was in the car with a friend when he crashed into another car without braking. 4-year-old Gio Roos was killed in the accident.

Police investigation revealed that Vloet had over twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood and was speeding. Data from his car showed that he was driving at 203 kilometers per hour, well above the speed limit, which was 130 kilometers per hour at the time.

Vloet was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison in 2023. He ultimately served 20 months and was released from custody in May, according to Omroep Brabant.

Vloet previously played for PSV, NAC, Breda, Excelsior, and Heracles Almelo, among others. He has signed with the South African club for one season, with the option to renew.
