Police van hits, seriously injures pedestrian near Schaijk

A pedestrian was struck and seriously injured Tuesday evening after being hit by a police van on the shoulder of the A50 near Schaijk, Noord-Brabant, authorities said. The man was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. during a traffic jam on the A50 near Schaijk. Police were driving on the highway shoulder because they were transporting a detainee. Authorities said officers are allowed to use the shoulder at appropriate speed while carrying someone in custody.

The pedestrian's condition has not been released publicly, but officials confirmed he was rushed to the hospital. Police said it remains unclear why the pedestrian was on the shoulder at the time of the crash

The police van’s windshield was damaged in the collision. The occupants of the vehicle were not injured. The suspect being transported was taken to a detention facility.
