Dutch June temperature record broken as 38.2°C recorded in Eindhoven

The Netherlands recorded its highest June temperature on record on Friday afternoon, with 38.2 degrees Celsius measured in Eindhoven at 2:40 p.m., according to Weeronline. The previous June record of 37.9 degrees Celsius dates back to 27 June 1947 in Venlo. Temperatures in Horst, Limburg, also climbed to around 38 degrees during the afternoon.

Temperatures are set to climb even further in the coming hours, with a chance that 40 degrees Celsius will be reached. That threshold has only been recorded twice before, on 25 and 26 July 2019.

The national temperature record in the Netherlands stands at 40.7 degrees Celsius, recorded in Gilze-Rijen in Noord-Brabant.

The Bij ons in Brabant concert at Philips Stadium in Eindhoven has been cancelled for Friday evening due to the heat. The organisers say the municipality has revoked the event permit. “This decision hits us hard,” they said, adding that months of preparation had gone into the show with “a lot of passion and dedication.”

A number of events were cancelled on Friday due to the extreme heat, including Defqon.1, Spoorpark Live and ’t Wonder. Other festivals, such as Jera On Air in Ysselsteyn and Concert at Sea on the Brouwersdam in Zeeland, are still expected to continue as planned. Meanwhile, Lago Lago in the Achterhoek has temporarily suspended alcohol sales until at least 6 p.m

Local authorities are also cancelling Veterans Day events on Saturday in response to the expected weather. In Zoetermeer, the planned celebration has been scrapped. Mayor Michel Bezuijen described it as a difficult but necessary decision, stressing that public safety takes priority.

Veterans Day events have been cancelled in several places, including Leiden and the municipalities of Mook en Middelaar, Huizen, and Zuidplas. Huizen is now exploring options to reschedule the event at a later date.

In The Hague, the national Veterans Day programme has been modified because of the extreme heat. The parade at the Hofvijver and a planned gathering on the Malieveld have both been cancelled, while the opening ceremony at the Koninklijke Schouwburg will still take place.

The ’t Wonder culinary music festival in Woerden was also cancelled. Organisers say the mayor concluded that visitor safety could not be ensured under the conditions. The event is expected to continue on Saturday, pending further developments.

“This decision is very hard for us,” said organiser Brendo Festen. “Together with all crew and participants, we have been working in the heat for a week and a half, but of course we will accept this decision.” Visitors with a Friday ticket can exchange it for a Saturday ticket. Last year, the festival attracted thousands of visitors, according to the Woerden newspaper Het Kontakt.
