Video: Two people die at recreational lakes on hot Sunday
Two people died on Sunday in incidents at recreational lakes in Limburg and Overijssel. A German man drowned in Lake Leukermeer in Well, and a person died at the recreation park Het Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal after being pulled from the water and resuscitated.
The German man in Well was swimming with a friend at around 2:50 p.m. when he disappeared underwater, De Limburger reported. When he did not resurface, the friend and others from the group alerted the emergency services.
Divers, boats, jet skis, and drones, among others, responded to the lake and launched a large search operation. The man’s body was found near the beach later in the afternoon.
In Oldenzaal, Overijssel, emergency services received a report of a possible drowning at around 6:00 p.m. Visitors were asked to leave the water so that emergency services could search for the victim, according to RTV Oost.
The person was pulled from the water and resuscitated, but died later. The police said on X that this was a natural death, not a drowning. No details were released regarding the person’s identity.
Deputy Mayor Rutger Bouwman of Oldenzaal said that the incident made a strong impression on those at the recreation park “on this warm and busy day.” Victim support is available to those who need it. “Our thoughts go out to the bereaved, friends, and those involved,” the deputy mayor said.
