Man killed when approaching train sucked him out of his wheelchair at Amsterdam station

A man in a wheelchair died after getting hit by a train at the Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station on Thursday afternoon. According to the police, the suction effect of a passing train pulled the 68-year-old onto the train tracks.

The man was too close to the track when the incident happened at around 3 p.m. on Thursday. Emergency services responded to the scene en masse and tried to resuscitate the man. Their efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police concluded that this was a tragic accident. Authorities ruled out foul play, and said this was not a case of suicide, a spokesperson told NU.nl.

Victim support services were being offered to those who witnessed the incident in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. Support was also made available to the first responders who tried to help the man.

The accident halted train traffic to and from the station for several hours.
