Italian woman, 45, identified as Amsterdam-Oost murder victim; Husband is a suspect
Dutch officials have named Ilenia Panzolini, a 45-year-old Italian, as the woman killed in a crime two weeks ago on Madurastraat in Amsterdam-Oost. Her body was found inside the residence shortly after 8 p.m. on April 17.
Panzolini and her husband, suspect Antonio L., 46, were married and originally from the Italian town, Montefiascone, about 100 kilometers north of Rome, NH reported.
The case has attracted heavy attention across Italian media. Reports say Panzolini moved to Amsterdam a decade ago and worked as a waitress there.
Montefiascone Mayor Giulia De Santis told Italian television last week: “We are shocked and respect the grief and silence of the family.” She declared a day of mourning for the town.
Montefiascone residents, many of whom know Ilenia and Antonio and their families personally, expressed shock over the murder and described it as "yet another case of femicide" in interviews with Italian TV channel Rai.
Social media was filled with tributes soon after the death. According to De Telegraaf, the woman's former teacher, Rossana, wrote: “I am deeply touched. Ilenia was one of my students many years ago. The memory I have of her is that of a polite and sensitive young woman. May she rest in peace.”
Authorities have shared little about the ongoing investigation. Antonio L. was under restrictions that allowed him to contact only his lawyer. Those limits have been lifted, according to a public prosecutor’s office spokesperson who spoke with AT5. The court has now extended his pre-trial detention by 90 days.
