Patient dies after treatment under general anesthesia at Oosterhout dental clinic

A patient died in January 2026 after undergoing treatment at a dental clinic in Oosterhout, in the province of Noord-Brabant. The treatment was carried out by a dentist specializing in procedures under full anesthesia, typically intended for patients with severe dental anxiety. The incident occurred at Narcodent Oosterhout, a dental clinic based at De Waard 5 in Oosterhout, BN DeStem reported.

An anesthesiologist is responsible for putting the patient under full anesthesia. While the patient is unconscious, the dentist carries out several procedures in a single session. Under normal circumstances, this involves certified medications and constant monitoring of the patient’s vital condition.

The patient’s death occurred either during the treatment or soon afterward, though the precise cause has not been disclosed. The clinic referred to the incident as deeply tragic and extended its sympathies. “We are extremely sorry for what has occurred. This tragic event has deeply affected us, and our sympathy and thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased," a spokesperson said to Omroep Brabant.

Authorities, including the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ), have initiated an inquiry into the incident. The dental practice says it is cooperating fully, but is withholding additional information pending the outcome of the investigation. “Since the investigation is still ongoing, we are not able to comment further at this stage.”

The clinic has commissioned an external, independent committee to look into how the incident occurred.
