Man dies after falling ill in police custody in Zutphen

A man in Zutphen has passed away after becoming unwell in police custody. He was arrested around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday at a hotel on ’s Gravenhof. Not long after, he fell ill in the police detention facility, where he was given medical treatment before being transferred to hospital. He died there several days later.

Police had previously visited the hotel on ’s Gravenhof that night in response to disturbance reports. It was during their second visit that they proceeded to arrest the man. After being arrested in Zutphen, the man was taken to the police cell complex in Apeldoorn, where he fell ill shortly after arrival.

The man died in hospital on Monday after being taken there for medical treatment that began immediately after he became unwell in police custody.

The cell complex in Apeldoorn is used by the Oost Nederland police unit, which includes Zutphen. Like other Dutch detention facilities, it is equipped with continuous camera monitoring, and staff are trained to identify and respond to medical emergencies.

Since the man died while in police custody, the Rijksrecherche has started an independent investigation, led by the Public Prosecution Service.

The investigation is examining what exactly led to the man’s illness and whether police procedures were properly followed. While the Rijksrecherche inquiry is ongoing, police and prosecutors are not providing further details about his identity or the cause of death.

It has been an eventful week for police in the Netherlands, with three separate instances of officers wounding suspects with gunfire occuring in Hilversum, Tiel, and Goes.
