Cool temps and showers mixed with sunny spells expected for May holidays, King's Day
The weather will be a mixed bag this May holiday and King’s Day, according to the meteorological institute KNMI. In the coming weeks, the institute forecasts dry and sunny spells, but also clouds and showers. And maximums will likely be on the cool side for the rest of the month.
Officially, the April-May holidays only start at the end of next week, but schools can exercise the freedom to bring that forward. This means that many children are already on holiday starting today.
And that holiday is off to a good start, weather-wise. Today will be dry with frequent periods of sunshine and little wind. Maximums will range between 17 and 20 degrees, from the Wadden Islands to deeper inland. Overnight temperatures will drop to around 8 degrees Celsius, and no rain is expected.
On Saturday, the weather will be much cloudier with occasional showers from late morning and during the afternoon, especially in the east and the southeast. The day will be noticeably cooler, with maximums ranging between 12 degrees Celsius along the coast and up to 18 degrees in the far east and southeast. The wind will be weak to moderate, coming from the west.
The KNMI expects the changeable weather to continue through Monday, with even lower temperatures from Sunday onward. “Dry from Tuesday with sunny periods, but quite cool.” The institute forecasts maximums around the mid-teens through next week.
Further ahead, including over King’s Day on the 27th, the KNMI sees a 70 to 80 percent chance of fairly cool weather with occasional showers. “After that, the probability of maximum temperatures above the long-term average increases,” the meteorological institute said, but added that the uncertainty regarding temperature forecasts is “much greater than normal.”
