Europe-wide speed enforcement campaign begins with increased police and camera checks

A Europe-wide “speedweek” is taking place this week in more than 20 countries, including the Netherlands, with extra speed checks on roads, Hart van Nederland reported.

The annual initiative is led by the European traffic police cooperation network Roadpol. More than 15,000 officers are carrying out additional speed enforcement checks across participating countries during the week.

In the Netherlands, the campaign comes as speeding fines have increased in recent months. Data cited from the Dutch research institute WODC show fines rose by more than 3 percent to 4 percent over the past half-year. Driving 10 kilometers per hour over the speed limit on a highway currently costs 84 euros, plus 9 euros in administrative fees.

The report states that researchers say fines have been high for years and are seen by some as a form of hidden taxation.

In commentary on the 538 Ochtendshow, Flitsmeister managing director Jorn de Vries discussed which day of the week is expected to see the most speeding tickets during the campaign and noted that another speed enforcement week is scheduled later this year.
