38-year-old arrested in Terneuzen for exploiting 83-year-old for money at his home
A 38-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of exploiting an 83-year-old resident in his own home, police reported.
Police said the case came to light after a home care worker noticed a stranger in the older man’s residence and reported her concerns. Family members then spoke with the 83-year-old and learned he may have been under pressure for an extended period. According to the police, the suspect allegedly forced the victim to withdraw cash and hand over his debit card.
Investigators reviewing the man’s bank account found that significant sums were withdrawn and spent over a short period, deviating from his normal spending patterns.
The 38-year-old is also reported to have frequently visited the area near the victim’s home in Binnenstad-Java, demanding money, food, and cigarettes. The victim told authorities that these encounters left him feeling afraid.
“The rapid reporting allowed police to act quickly,” a spokesperson said. “Within two days, the suspect was apprehended on Kennedylaan in Terneuzen. We urge anyone who notices suspicious situations, particularly involving vulnerable older residents, to report them immediately.”
