Police show hologram of suspect in 2009 Bilthoven child rape

The police released a composite sketch and 3D model of a man wanted for raping a 15-year-old girl in the Panbos woods near Bilthoven in 2009. The 3D model will be shown as a hologram in the center of Bilthoven. The police hope that the hologram will lead to someone recognizing the suspect, as happened in another child rape case in Schiedam and Vlaardingen in 2021. In that case, a man recognized his colleague when seeing a 3D model on social media.

The suspect raped a 15-year-old girl in the Panbos woods between Bilthoven and Bosch en Duin on 4 September 2009. He encountered her on a bike path early in the afternoon and attacked. The man was on foot.

The girl described the man as light-skinned with light, possibly blue eyes, dark hair, and an unshaven face. He was wearing a blue tracksuit jacket with white stripes on the sleeves and had an unkempt appearance. He smelled of alcohol, already in the early afternoon. The man was around 30 or 40 years old at the time and is now likely somewhere between his mid-40s and 60s.

The police created the composite sketch and 3D model using the victims’ descriptions from shortly after the crime. The victim helped the police with the model.

“The goal of the 3D model is to trigger something in the public,” police spokesperson Suzallen Lesquillier said. “The model may not be a 100% match to the perpetrator’s appearance in 2009. Certain details may be incorrect. But we hope that when people see these visualizations, they’ll wonder: could this be my neighbor, my colleague, my cousin?”

The police already appealed to the public for information last year and received many tips. The police exhaustively investigated every name provided, asking several men to provide DNA for a one-time comparison, but the results have always been negative. More men will likely be approached to provide DNA based on the tips the police hope the hologram will trigger.

A €10,000 reward is available for the tip that leads to the suspect’s identification.
