Storm Kristin kills 83-year-old Dutch woman in Portugal; Body found inside car in water

On Thursday, Storm Kristin, which originated from a rapidly intensifying low-pressure system off the Iberian Peninsula, claimed the life of an 83-year-old Dutch woman in southern Portugal. Her body was found in a car that had ended up in water near Silves, authorities reported.

Kristin caused widespread damage along the Portuguese coast with winds exceeding 170 kilometers per hour. The storm has killed at least five people in Portugal.

North of Lisbon, a motorist was killed by a falling tree, and other victims across the country were struck by flying debris.

Nearly 450,000 households remained without power on Thursday morning, after more than one million homes lost electricity earlier in the week, according to Portuguese broadcaster RTP. Emergency services are continuing to try to restore power.
